A Way Out

8 Games Like A Way Out to Play Together in Two-Player Co-op

After A Way Out, the obvious next step is It Takes Two, then Split Fiction: same studio, same idea of an adventure that only works with two people. Want something different? Portal 2 and We Were Here Together are about puzzles, Cuphead is about skill. Here are 8 games where your partner is not a bonus but half the game, playable online or side by side on the couch.

What makes A Way Out work

Released in 2018 by Hazelight Studios, A Way Out follows the prison break of Leo and Vincent, two inmates who could not be more different. It can only be played with two people in split screen, on the same couch or online. Often each of you is living a different scene on your half of the screen, and you have to keep talking to move forward.

It takes about 5 hours to finish according to players on IGDB, so one or two evenings. It is short, intense and always changing: stealth, chases, minigames, quiet moments. So a good game like A Way Out has to be designed for two from day one, with a real story and moments where one player relies on the other.

How to pick the next one

If the shared story is what got you, stay with Hazelight for It Takes Two and Split Fiction, or try Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, from the same director, Josef Fares. If you like solving things together, Portal 2 and We Were Here Together. For laughing and yelling, Overcooked! 2 and Unravel Two. And for a real challenge, Cuphead. You will find more ideas in our couch co-op guide.

  1. It Takes Two

    1. It Takes Two

    2021 · Main story 11 h

Hazelight's next game, and for many their best. A couple on the verge of divorce is turned into dolls, and every level switches up the gameplay completely. More colorful and funnier than A Way Out, but just as impossible to play alone. The first one to start next. More ideas in our games like It Takes Two.

  2. Split Fiction

    2. Split Fiction

    2025 · Main story 14 h

Hazelight's follow-up to It Takes Two. Two writers get trapped inside their own stories, one science fiction and one fantasy, and the game keeps jumping between those worlds. The same creative madness as It Takes Two, with a slightly more adventurous tone. Perfect for duos who loved the previous two.

  3. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

    3. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

    2013 · Main story 2.5 h

Josef Fares's first game, made before A Way Out. You control two brothers at once, one per stick, in a short and moving fairy tale. Two people can also share the controller. Great for seeing where the idea of telling a story through cooperation came from.

  4. Portal 2

    4. Portal 2

    2011 · Main story 4.5 h

  5. We Were Here Together

    5. We Were Here Together

    2019

A puzzle game where you are split up and can only talk through a walkie-talkie. One of you sees the symbol, the other has the lever, and everything depends on how well you describe things. Expect laughs and a few arguments. It is played online, each on your own screen.

  6. Unravel Two

    6. Unravel Two

    2018 · Main story 5.5 h

Two little yarn creatures tied together by a thread cross very realistic landscapes. You swing, climb and help each other past every obstacle. The pace is gentle and the puzzles are approachable. Perfect for playing with someone who does not game much, right on the couch.

  7. Overcooked! 2

    7. Overcooked! 2

    2018 · Main story 5 h

No prison break here, but the same rule applies: nothing works without communication. You cook in absurd kitchens that move, catch fire or split in half. It is short, intense and very funny. For nights when you want to laugh and shout at each other. See our games like Overcooked! 2.

  8. Cuphead

    8. Cuphead

    2017 · Main story 8 h

A run-and-gun platformer styled like a 1930s cartoon, built around boss fights. It is very hard, but with two players you push each other, revive each other and eventually win. For duos who want a skill challenge more than a story.
